Acids, Bases and Salts Class 10 Notes: Chapter 2
Acids, bases, and salts are three main groups of chemical compounds. They have certain definite properties which can distinguish from each other.
What are Acids?
An Acid can be defined as a compound which produces hydrogen ion (H+), when it is dissolved in water. The word acid is derived from the Latin word meaning sour. Acids are found in many substances including the fruits. For example, citric acid is present in citrus fruits.
What are Bases?
Bases can be defined as a compound which produces hydroxide ion (OH-), when dissolved in water. They are found in all soaps, toothpaste, egg whites, dishwashing liquids, and ammonia.
What are Salts?
Salts can be defined as a compound formed by the combination of acids and bases through the neutralization reaction. The common examples of salt are sodium chloride or table salt, Magnesium sulphate used as bath salts, Ammonium nitrate used as fertilizers, and baking soda used in cooking.
