Metals and Non-metals Class 10 Notes

Metals and Non-metals Class 10 Notes: Chapter 3

Elements are broadly classified into metals and non-metals. In the modern periodic table of elements, Metals and Non-metals Class 10 Notes are grouped separately. All metals are arranged on the left side and the nonmetals on the right side. Altogether there are 70 metals and 22 non-metals in a periodic table of elements.

What are Metals?
Metals are lustrous, opaque, ductile and malleable, and good conductors of heat and electricity. Most of the metals are solids at room temperature, except few. There are many metals that occur in nature either as free elements or in the form of their compounds. Aluminum, Copper, Iron, Zinc, are examples of metals.

What are Nonmetals?
The elements, which do not possess the properties of metals are termed as non-metals. hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus are examples of non-metals. They are brittle and can be easily broken into sub-particles. They are bad conductors of heat and electricity and exists in both solids and gases except few.
